My reading process BEFORE I read The Norton Field Guide To Writing

Skimming through the text

Reading is one of my hobbies in the leisure time and I always enjoy reading especially fictions and magazines. First of all, when I received a reading assignment, I would look at the topic first and scan through the text before I read it to get a rough idea of  the essay.

Read the book in details and look up the dictionary

After that I will read the text thoroughly and at the same time looking at the questions from the assignment to see if there is any part from the text that can answer the questions. When I encounter words that I don't know and also very important in explaining the ideas of the essay, I will look up the dictionary. You may also find some interesting examples on  how to use the word differently in the dictionary which always makes reading fun and interesting.

Try to highlight the central idea of each paragraph

If you still have some answer you don't know how to do in the assignment, try to highlight the main idea of each paragraph because it will help you a lot to understand the whole picture of the ideas in the essay. Also, it will help you to answer the questions quickly as you have already broken down all the ideas come from the essay.
